WSOF Women's Strawweight Champion Jessica Aguilar is no longer with the organization, announcing on The MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani that she is officially a free agent.
She has not yet signed with the UFC, but she says she got her release because she "decided" she was going to be the UFC Champion.
Aguilar, 33, has won ten straight fights dating back more than four and a half years, including each of her three appearances in the World Series of Fighting.
Should she enter the UFC - and it's highly likely that they'll wind up coming to terms soon - she has a ready made feud with former UFC Champ Carla Esparza. Esparza accused Aguilar - who defeated her in 2011 in Bellator - of PED use in a recent interview, one of many comments exchanged between the two over the past several years.
Penick's Analysis: I'm not sure if this means the WSOF is abandoning women's MMA, but that wouldn't be a surprising development. Aguilar should be in the UFC's strawweight field, and probably would have been already had she not signed with the WSOF before the UFC announced they were bringing the division in. Now that she's officially a free agent, it shouldn't take long to bring her in, and she'll be an immediate contender in the young, underdeveloped division.
