Khabib Nurmagomedov underwent a successful procedure on Friday to repair an injured meniscus in his right knee.
New of the surgery's success was passed along via Ariel Helwani on Twitter, citing confirmation from Nurmagomedov's manager Ali Abdelaziz. The lightweight contender is now targeting an October return to the Octagon.
Nurmagomedov was scheduled once again to fight Donald Cerrone - this time at UFC 187 later this month - but the fight has been delayed again because of the injury suffered in training this week. The 26-year-old fighter remains undefeated in his MMA career, having won all 22 of his career fights. That includes a victory over the current Champion in the division, Rafael dos Anjos, whom Nurmagomedov dominated en route to a decision just last year.
Penick's Analysis: If Donald Cerrone beats John Makdessi at UFC 187, I think we'll wind up seeing Dos Anjos-Cerrone II and Nurmagomedov vs. Anthony Pettis in October. Should Cerrone get upset by Makdessi, that could potentially open the door to Nurmagomedov getting an immediate title fight in his return. However, Pettis may yet get his rematch with dos Anjos in that scenario if he beats Myles Jury in July. The lightweight division is a bit in flux at the moment, and with two of the top three in the division on the shelf, the UFC may have to get creative.
