With Khabib Nurmagomedov injured, Donald Cerrone needed a new opponent if he was going to stay on the UFC 187 card next month. Well, he's got one, but it's a bit out of left field.
The UFC announced on Thursday that John Makdessi will step in on short notice for that matchup, just a month after his TKO win over Shane Campbell at UFC 186 in Montreal.
Cerrone enters the May 23 event on a seven fight winning streak, most recently defeating Benson Henderson in a contentious decision on late notice. The fight with Nurmagomedov was to be a No. 1 contender fight, but he's now got an opponent significantly further down the ladder in the division.
Former Strikeforce Champ Josh Thomson had been lobbying for that fight, but ultimately didn't get the opportunity.
UFC 187 hits Las Vegas on pay-per-view in three and a half weeks, headlined now by the Light Heavyweight Title bout between Anthony Johnson and Daniel Cormier.
