Jon Jones turned himself in to the Albuquerque police on Monday night, but he wasn't there long.
Jones posted his $2,500 bail, and was released from Bernalillo county's Metropolitan Detention Center the same night.
The UFC Light Heavyweight Champion was allegedly the cause of a three car accident on Sunday in New Mexico, ultimately fleeing the scene after his rented SUV was totaled. A pregnant woman suffered a broken arm in the crash, turning Jones' decision to flee into a felony worthy of up to three years in prison.
Jones is scheduled to defend his title against Anthony "Rumble" Johnson at UFC 187 next month, and according to his attorney, Vincent Ward, he's still thinking ahead to that bout.
"He wants to get down to training for this fight he has," Ward said to Albuquerque news station KOAT. "I know obviously he wouldn't want to be dealing with this right now, but Jon is a great guy, he's taking all this seriously."
Penick's Analysis: Is it a requirement of a defense attorney to be tone deaf on a situation like this? Guess I'll check with Michael Bane. "Obviously he wouldn't want to be dealing with this right now." "He wants to get down to training for this fight." Those two statements don't exactly mesh with "he's taking all this seriously." At this point in the proceedings, Jones should be less concerned with UFC 187 and more concerned with the fact that he's facing jail time for something he did. Allegedly. Given the witness statements from the scene and him being recognized by the off-duty officer, Jones is going to have to hope for mercy from the court, because he's very much in the wrong on this one. Going right into focusing-on-the-fight mode may give off a very bad look.
