Jon Jones is a person of interest in a hit and run accident that happened in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on Sunday, and now we have a little more information on how he came to be identified.
A report from TMZ Sports on Monday morning stated that an off-duty police officer recognized a man running from the direction of the scene and believed it to be Jones. A search of the vacant vehicle turned up documents with Jones' name on it.
Additionally, ESPN's Brett Okamoto on Twitter says the vehicle was a rental car, and there was a marijuana pipe found inside. Again, however, police officials are unequivocal that there was no cocaine present at the scene.
Jones Update: ABQ off duty policeman identified Jones running from three-car accident. He was in a rental car. Marijuana pipe inside.
Police are still searching for Jones and wish to speak to him on the incident.
Fleeing the scene of an accident where no serious injuries have occurred is a misdemeanor in New Mexico, and Jones could face up to a year in prison and a $1,000 fine for that alone should charges be brought forth.
Penick's Analysis: This is a bad situation for Jones. It's not as bad as it could have been, thankfully, as it appears there weren't any serious injuries suffered by any of the others involved. Jones fleeing the scene, if it was indeed Jones (it seems pretty convincing that it was), is terrible, and if he did so because he had drugs in his rental vehicle it's even worse. This coming off the heels of the cocaine issue. Jones needs help, and he needs to take responsibility for his actions here. What that means for his fighting career is secondary.
