A thoroughly dominating 25-minute win wasn't enough for Demetrious "Mighty Mouse" Johnson at UFC 186 on Saturday night. Instead, the UFC Flyweight Champion decided to go for a late armbar with time winding down to score a literal last second submission win over Kyoji Horiguchi.
The Champion out-classed his challenger from the outset, mixing up strikes with his relentless wrestling attack to wear Horiguchi down. Horiguchi did a good job defending the takedowns for much of the first 15 minutes, but it started to take a toll as they went to the championship rounds.
As the fifth began, Johnson's strategy in the first four rounds paid off, as he got Horiguchi down for more extended periods of time, looking for openings in side control. Then, after the ten second warning came in, he listened to his corner and transitioned for the armbar in beautiful fashion.
He locked it on tight, and forced Horiguchi to tap at the 4:59 mark of the fifth round, beating Frankie Edgar's mark for the latest submission win in UFC history. As it came immediately before the horn, that's a mark that won't ever be bested.
