Anderson Silva's initial reaction to his failed drug test following UFC 183 was caught on camera for "The Ultimate Fighter: Brazil 4," and the episode featuring said reaction aired for the first time on Sunday.
In the reaction translated by the UFC for the Fight Pass broadcast, Silva categorically denies PED use, admitting to taking only an anti-inflammatory shot.
The reaction came as Silva got a call from his manager, Ed Soares, and this was his reaction:
"What? What do you mean? No, I didn't take anything," he plead (via MMAJunkie.com). "Hear me out. I never took anything like that. No way. I've never taken anything. I did take anti-inflammatory shots.
"No way! I'm telling you I didn't do it! Are you crazy? I took hydroxocobalamin for three days. That was the only thing I took."
According to MMAJunkie's report, several native Portuguese speakers have relayed that what Silva actually admitted to taking was dexalgen which, unlike hydroxocobalamin, contains an anti-inflammatory steroid dexamethasone. However, that still would not explain the drostanolone in his system.
Regardless, Silva's insistent denial continued when in discussion with his strength and conditioning coach Rogerio Camoes.
"I've never used any anabolic steroid to fight or to improve my performance... No, Master! I've never taken any of that! Are you crazy? Am I crazy? I've never taken any of that. I don't know what happened."
Silva continues to proclaim his innocence, and will have a chance to argue his case when he appears before the Nevada Athletic Commission.
Penick's Analysis: He's convincing in putting out the idea he was completely shocked by the announcement, but we still need to see exactly what he's going to argue in front of the commission. Now, he could still be in complete denial about the fact that he got caught, and wouldn't even admit it to those close to him, but he may also believe he didn't do anything wrong. Even if he took something without
knowing it was illegal, he'll be held accountable for that, so there's not a lot more to glean from these comments out of TUF.
