Cub Swanson returns to action tonight for the first time since his brutal loss to Frankie Edgar in November.
Reflecting back on the loss this week, Swanson says the post-fight reaction from fans was even worse for him than the loss itself.
"The loss hurt, but some of the backlash I got from social media – from fans – hurt a lot worse," Swanson said in an interview with MMAjunkie.com. "They just kept critiquing me about my wrestling, about how I'm washed up, blah, blah. It really hurt because I've always felt like I just fight for the fans. I've always given it all I have.
"I mean, I got my ass kicked for five rounds in that fight, and I didn't want to give up because it's just not my style. That definitely took a toll."
Penick's Analysis: Fans can be extremely fickle in their response to what a fighter does from fight to fight, and just as quickly as they're willing to praise a great performance, they'll rip apart a bad one. Swanson lost to a better fighter, that's just what happened. He's not washed up, and any backlash on his performance wasn't deserved, because Edgar's was simply that good. If he can get back on track and defeat Max Holloway today, he'll probably experience the other end of that fan response.
