Joanne "JoJo" Calderwood was shockingly upset by Maryna Moroz last Saturday at UFC Fight Night 64, and what was perhaps even more surprising was how she was not ever really in the fight. She got hit early and often, then succumbed to a pulled guard armbar in short order.
Calderwood's not making any excuses for her performance, but she hinted at some significant personal issues plaguing her into the fight while sending a message to her fans on Facebook in the wake of the loss.
Here's her statement:
"Really blown away by the support that I feel I don't deserve esp after my performance and from so many positive amazing people. I want you guys to know the truth and I tried my best to not give up. i felt it was the only thing I had to hold on to. I guess in life sometimes it is okay to put your hands up and say your not okay. I am my own worst enemy for this and think I can deal with anything as long as I can train and fight but at the end of the day I got in there and found out the hard way that I am not okay. I'm not gonna make excuses my training was as always the best and I really gave everything as always and my focus was only on the fight. As for my Personal life it has not been good and to make matters worse I had to deal with something that I am still in shock about the night before my fight. I don't know what's next but I know everything could be a lot worse and you shouldn't complain about life esp when I am doing what I love. I guess it's now just a case of finding the right people that are with me here at the bottom and get back to looking at the stars again.
'We are all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars.'"
Penick's Analysis: Without knowing exactly what she's dealing with, I just hope Calderwood is alright, and is able to work through whatever may be happening in her life right now. She shouldn't have fought on Saturday, but as she says here, she thought she could get through it. It's a hard lesson to learn, but learn it she did, and now she has to find a way to rebuild after having her clear title path derailed.
