Conor McGregor will say a lot of things over the next several months to get a rise out of fans and UFC Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo. He's said a lot of things already. However, Aldo says he's not going to let himself get riled up by the challenger's antics.
Speaking to media in Las Vegas this week as part of the UFC 189 media world tour, Aldo said he wasn't all that upset by McGregor's "favela" comments late last week, and believes he's getting in the challengers head more than anything.
"I lived in a favela," Aldo said (via MMAFighting.com). "I wasn't upset when he said that. He talks a lot. If I care about everything he says, I will be f***ed. I just relax, try to stay cool. It's normal. I'm here to promote the fight. When I'm inside the cage, nobody will take anything away from me. I focus on the fight, not on what people say. Pressure is nothing. It's part of the job. I fight in there. There is where I have to prove everything. In there, I will be concentrated to do my job.
"Cub Swanson was the first to talk a lot on fight week in the WEC, and I got there and ran through him. It's going to be the same thing with this one. I was never upset [with everything McGregor said]. I just laughed at it. It's tough to get me pissed off. My mind is my strongest weapon. It's hard to get into my mind. I don't worry about it. Face-offs mean nothing. I'm in his head and he knows what's coming. He asked me to look into his eyes and I did. I saw how he is. I've studied him, I know all his movements. I already know what to do in there."
Penick's Analysis: Aldo has been laughing off McGregor's comments for some time now, obviously referring to him as the "joker" of his featherweight kingdom in the past. It's an attitude likely to benefit him in their fight in July, though there's an awful lot of time for McGregor to chip away at his patience. At any rate, there's been plenty of quotable gold coming out from both of them, as they've been quite entertaining already. It's not set to get old just yet, and will boost their eventual matchup come July.
