"I own this town. I own Rio de Janeiro. So for him to say he's the king, and I am the joker... if this was a different time, I would invade his favela on horseback and kill anyone that was not fit to work. But we are in a new time, so I'll whoop his ass in July."
-Conor McGregor fires an opening salvo at the first of several press conferences with Jose Aldo this month for UFC 189.
Penick's Analysis: McGregor's obviously not afraid to go anywhere with his comments, but he's playing his role extremely well right now. He's projecting a confidence held by the biggest stars in this sport, and obviously holds himself there already as well. Whether or not you think he can beat Jose Aldo - and I'm highly skeptical of that happening come July - he believes it clearly with every fiber of his being. The fight is still several months away but it's already so compelling between the two of them. Dana White was right on in that press conference in Rio when he said it's the biggest UFC featherweight fight of all time, and by the time it happens, it'll be hard to think of anything that will come close in that division for a long time to come.
