Despite vehemently denying he knowingly used PEDs prior to his return at UFC 183, Anderson Silva is reportedly set to admit using them in order to recover from the broken leg he suffered at UFC 168.

In a report from Brazilian site UOL, passed along Saturday night by UFC.com, Silva and his team are expected to tell the Nevada Athletic Commission that the drostanolone found in his system was used for recovery, and not to gain an advantage over Nick Diaz at UFC 183. Additionally, they'll reportedly argue that the low levels in his system didn't constitute an advantage over Diaz.

As for the oxazepam and temazepam in his system that he failed to disclose to the commission, the argument is that they were prescribed to help him deal with back spasms and pain stemming from a setback injury in December.

Silva will appear in front of the commission as early as this month, though an agenda hasn't yet been set for their next commission meeting.

Penick's Analysis: His previous denials aren't going to help his case here; even if it's entirely true that it was being used just this one time for recovery, there are a lot of people who won't look at his career the same ever again. Still, one of the things steroids are effective for is in helping the body recover faster than it might otherwise. That's one of the reasons they boost training capabilities, so it isn't in retrospect surprising Silva would have used them in that capacity.
