Following her upset win over Amanda Nunes last week at UFC Fight Night 61, Marion Reneau is looking to shoot right to the top, and wants a top matchup to move into title contention.
"Let's go for the top," Reneau said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "Let's go for Miesha Tate. Let's go for Alexis Davis. Let's go for those [top-ranked] girls who are right next to No. 1. Let's go."
"Absolutely, I want the title shot."
The 37-year-old has no time to waste in order to make that run, and whether she continues to enter fights as an underdog or not, she plans to continue to showcase her worth.
"Going in as the underdog [against Andrade], I read [that]... she thought she should be fighting somebody who's fifth-ranked," Reneau said. "I'm like, how do you know what I'm ranked? You don't know anything about me. I think that was her first mistake, underestimating me."
"I believe in myself, and it doesn't matter if I go into a fight the underdog. I'm there to show you why I'm not the underdog. I'm there to stop the cheering; I'm there to hush the crowd."
Penick's Analysis: Reneau could absolutely become a title contender in quick fashion if she's given the right level of opponent. If the UFC wants to put her in against someone like Tate or Davis or someone in that top five range, and she wins, they can sell her as a challenger. She showed her ground strength last weekend in surprising and impressive fashion, and given her age she understands she needs to move quickly to make something happen. That's just what one of those fights would do, and hopefully she'll get her chance.
