"I lost my best friend, my coach, my husband, my home, my car, my income. I lost everything. I would be completely justified sitting on my ass all day, but I want my son to see something else. I have to have him see me reach for things. So he knows he can do it too. This? It's not a sport to me. I'm literally doing this to fight my way back to life... You know, [Rousey's] father committed suicide. I remember when I heard that about her, thinking, 'Damn, that's why she's so good. She made it through that.' If you can survive what we have, what's a fight?"
-In a stirring feature in ESPN the Magazine, Cat Zingano touches on the tragic loss she suffered last year, and why she feels she and Ronda Rousey glean strength from their respective experiences.
Penick's Analysis: The full ESPN feature on Zingano is a must-read, and I encourage all to check it out at the link. Zingano's been through hell over the last couple of years, really all starting after her knee injury in May of 2013. It was a terrible series of events that nevertheless has led her to Saturday night, and she's entering her title opportunity with a survivalist's mindset. It's easy to root for Zingano, and if she comes back from all of these experiences and captures the UFC Women's Bantamweight Title at UFC 184, it will be an absolute triumph from the depths of despair she had understandably reached.
