UFC Lightweight Champ Anthony Pettis was very near a fight with Featherweight Champ Jose Aldo last year, and that remains a potential fight down the line if the two continue to defend their respective titles.
However, a new potentially major fight could be a possibility in the future with the emergence of Conor McGregor, as the rising Irish star could become the Champ himself later this year.
In an interview with DallasNews.com, Pettis commented on the McGregor hype, and said he's open to a future fight with either McGregor or Aldo, depending on whomever wins that fight.
Said the Champ, "I like the Conor Mcgregor hype, there's a lot of attention in that division. Between the superfight, whoever wins that fight [between Aldo and McGregor]."
Penick's Analysis: Obviously any potential "super fight" is quite a ways off, but the idea of a Pettis-McGregor fight a couple years down the line is fun to think about. McGregor has already said he plans to beat Aldo, defend the title, then move up to the lightweight division to go after that belt, and Pettis has already proven with his wins over Benson Henderson, Gilbert Melendez, and more that he's the current best at 155 lbs. The Aldo fight is more likely, because if Aldo beats McGregor as he'll be expected to do, all that's really left for him at 145 lbs. is a rematch with Frankie Edgar. That said, Pettis has Rafael dos Anjos and the Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Donald Cerrone winner next this year. Still, a year-end Aldo-Pettis fight isn't out of the realm of possibility at this stage.
