Dominick Cruz's injury woes have struck again, as the bantamweight announced on Monday that he's suffered another ACL injury, this time on his other knee.
"It is with great sadness to report I have experienced another ACL injury. This time it's in the right knee, opposite side of my first and second ACL injuries. Leading up to my last fight in September and after, I have practiced a very careful and methodical training and diet regime to keep my body healthy. Unfortunately, this is beyond my understanding and control. I don't have a timetable for my return but trust and know I will pour my heart and soul into returning to the Octagon. I want to thank the UFC, my fans and my sponsors ahead of time for your support and prayers. I appreciate you more than you could understand. I don't have any other facts to share right now. I, along with my camp, respectfully request privacy at this difficult time. Thank You."
Cruz missed three years of action because of the first two ACL injuries, returning in September with a fantastic win over Takeya Mizugaki. He was set to fight T.J. Dillashaw for the UFC Bantamweight Championship next prior to this injury.
Penick's Analysis: This is devastating news for Cruz, and a really, really depressing development. The return win over Mizugaki was such an excellent moment, and his fight with Dillashaw very much anticipated, that this is a huge letdown. Not only that, but it's got to force Cruz to look at whether or not he has a fighting future. He put so much effort into rehabbing the last injury, only to suffer a groin tear that he needed to rehab. Then he picked up that win, only to suffer yet another setback. Injuries at any point are mentally taxing, but after already being out of action for so long, this is just a whole hell of a lot for one man to go through. I feel awful for Cruz here, and wish him the best in his recovery.
