C.B. Dollaway wasn't given much of a chance to do anything against Lyoto Machida on Saturday night, as a body kick took him out of the picture before the fight really even got started.
At the post-fight press conference for UFC Fight Night 58, Dollaway described the unpleasantness brought on by that body kick, and why he wasn't entirely sure yet how much damage was done.
"I thought it was going to go to my head and he slipped it under my elbow," Dollaway said (via MMAFighting.com). "I thought I had it covered and took a step back, tried to take a breath and was basically paralyzed. It's a disappointing loss."
"I think it's just a liver kick, but it's starting to feel a little worse now that the adrenaline is wearing off, but hopefully it's just a liver kick and I'll be back in training soon and be ready to fight again."
Penick's Analysis: I don't think Dollaway was actually going to have much to threaten Machida with even had that fight gone longer, but taking a kick that just stops you in your tracks like that has to be disheartening. Regardless, the fight showed Dollaway his ceiling, and he can try to bounce back and get better. He's unlikely to ever break into the title picture in the UFC, but he's good enough to keep winning fights and making some money in the Octagon for as long as he's still into fighting. Those wins are just not going to come against elite competition.
