Heading into UFC 181 earlier this month, the UFC's plan for the Welterweight Title was to have the Johny Hendricks-Robbie Lawler winner fight Rory MacDonald at a presumed Montreal event in March.
With Lawler capturing the title in another close fight between the two, the UFC hasn't decided whether or not he'll fight Hendricks a third time or take on MacDonald, and if it's up to him, he'll have a bit more of a layoff as well.
"It's been a real busy year, but pretty much I'll be ready whenever the UFC tells me," Lawler said this week in an interview with Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour. "But I would prefer to fight like Memorial Day in Vegas or something like that. In May, June, or July, somewhere like Vegas. But, whatever - if the UFC needs me, I'll show up."
Penick's Analysis: Lawler fought five times in a 13-month span, if he wants some time off, he's more than earned it. The UFC has some other title fights they can slot into March and April events, namely Anthony Pettis vs. Rafael dos Anjos as soon as they can book it, Demetrious Johnson's next title defense, and T.J. Dillashaw vs. Dominick Cruz, to name a few; so if Lawler-Hendricks or Lawler-MacDonald can be pushed back to May, the UFC has plenty of options for those other cards right now.
