The UFC's decision to book Sara McMann vs. Miesha Tate was a sensible one, with both fighters ranked among the top five, but it wasn't the only initial option for Tate.
Tate had some verbal back and forth with Bethe Correia in the past couple of months, leading to that fight being a potentially reasonable fight for the UFC to book. However, they may have made their choice by default, as it turns out Correia suffered a detached retina in training that will keep her out for a little while.
According to a report from Ariel Helwani on Fox Sports 1's UFC Tonight program this week, citing confirmation from Correia's manager Wallid Ismail, Correia suffered the injury last month, and recently had surgery to repair the damage. She's hoping to be able to return by March or April.
Penick's Analysis: A detached retina is not an injury to take lightly, so hopefully for Correia's sake she doesn't rush her return. It's an issue that took Alan Belcher out of commission for a long time, and Michael Bisping as well, and it's something that can be re-aggravated if care isn't taken. So Correia needs to heal up smartly and take things at whatever pace they need to go.
