When Miesha Tate defeated Rin Nakai in Japan last month, Sara McMann immediately called her out. Tate was open to the fight herself, and it seemed that was the sensible next fight for both of them.
Since then, Tate's been linked to a potential fight with Bethe Correia as well, with nothing getting set on either front. As far as McMann's concerned, though, the fight should be with her.
"She was offered the fight against me and I haven't heard back yet," McMann said in an interview with FoxSports.com. "...If you cannot beat me, you will not beat Ronda. You are looking for a title fight, not looking to be a titleholder. You shouldn't have an easy path to go there."
"I come from a sport where you put your money where your mouth is. If you want to fight somebody and say you're going to fight somebody, you do it. Call me crazy."
McMann says, as far as she knows, the Tate fight isn't off the table, but she's definitely irritated by the delay in getting something booked.
Penick's Analysis: Tate-McMann and Tate-Correia both make sense for a number of reasons, and it's kind of a matter of what the UFC is looking to do. Correia should have to fight someone like Tate or McMann to earn a shot for the title, and with some talking between the two already, it's a fight the UFC would have an easy time selling. At the same time, McMann's right that fighters wanting to be in a title fight should have to get through her to get there, just as she'd have to get through more top contenders to get back there herself. It all adds up to someone being unhappy with a booking here into 2015, but McMann's certainly made a solid case.
