Jose Aldo and Chad Mendes have now fought one another for just under 30 total minutes through two fights, with Mendes only winning one round in that time.
However, despite a fairly one-sided nature to the feud, the second fight on Saturday at UFC 179 remained competitive, and Aldo said afterward that he's absolutely open to a third bout between the two.
"I saw Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard fight three times," Aldo said after the event (via MMAJunkie.com). "They were great fights. In this fight, of course, I'm still the champion. But Chad Mendes was also victorious in this fight, and the third fight, we're going to win again together."
"[A third fight] definitely can happen. He's a great athlete. He's always going to be fighting in this weight class, right on top. It's not [like] because he lost tonight... he's no good anymore. He's very good. He's got great potential, and in the future, we could meet again, and I hope that we have another great fight."
Penick's Analysis: Mendes is going to have to go on another significant run to get back there, but it's not out of the realm of possibility. And if Aldo decides to stay in the division, a third fight could eventually make sense. However, there are a number of other names who will line up for either their own rematch or their first crack at the title, so any future third fight between these two is going to have to wait for those fighters to get their shots.
