The UFC is giving Conor McGregor another headlining slot, as FoxSports.com reports that his previously reported bout with Dennis Siver for Jan. 18 in Boston will serve as the main event.
The Sunday night card on Fox Sports 1 follows the NFL's NFC Championship game on Fox that night, and is also expected to host a lightweight bout between Donald Cerrone and Myles Jury.
McGregor headlined the UFC's trip to Ireland in July, taking out Diego Brandao to set up a fight with Dustin Poirier, his first top ten opponent in the UFC. He made quick work of Poirier at UFC 178, and now returns to Boston, where he got a massive reaction in August of last year on the first Fox Sports 1 card.
This also happens to be the first return to Boston since that event, and will take place at the TD Garden.
Penick's Analysis: I'm surprised on some fronts that this is going to be the main event, because it could have easily been assumed the Cerrone-Jury fight getting talked about would take that slot. That said, if they're hell-bent on getting McGregor a title fight, a feature bout like this against a man he should beat handily in Siver - in front of a likely heavily pro-McGregor crowd - is probably the way to do it. It's transparent as hell, but it could work just fine in their favor.
