Donald Cerrone said before UFC 178 that he planned to fight again this year with a win over Eddie Alvarez, rather than wait out a shot at the Anthony Pettis vs. Gilbert Melendez winner. Now that he's picked up the victory, that plan hasn't changed.
"I, of course, want to stay very busy, so taking a fight on November or December would be great for me," Cerrone said at the post-fight press conference (via MMAJunkie.com). "Waiting? I don't know. I want to fight."
Cerrone's decision win over Alvarez in a competitive and fun fight was his fourth straight in 2014 alone, and fifth straight overall. It's his longest winning streak since putting together six wins in the WEC and UFC in a row in 2010 and 2011.
Penick's Analysis: The UFC can try to put back together the Cerrone vs. Khabib Nurmagomedov fight they had been targeting for last night's card initially, if Nurmagomedov can heal up in time to fight in November or December. Barring that, I'm not sure what else makes sense for Cerrone, but since he wants to fight they'll get him a fight. As for Alvarez, a fight with Benson Henderson sounds great to me.
