UFC 178 provided exactly what it promised to deliver on Saturday night, and gave the UFC a number of options as far as post-fight bonuses were concerned.
Conor McGregor continued his stratospheric trajectory, taking one of the $50,000 "Performance of the Night" bonuses in his win over Dustin Poirier. McGregor demolished Poirier in the first round, advancing his spot as a top contender at 145 lbs. in the process.
Former Champ Dominick Cruz earned the other $50,000 "Performance of the Night" award, stemming from his destruction of Takeya Mizugaki on the prelims. The minute-long win came in Cruz's first fight since October of 2011.
Controversy abounds in the fight awarded "Fight of the Night," as both Tim Kennedy and Yoel Romero earned an extra $50K for their efforts. Romero won in the third round with a vicious assault, but it came after Kennedy arguably had him stopped after the end of the second round. Unfortunately for Kennedy, the loss is most likely to remain on his record even in the case of an appeal.
