Antonio "Bigfoot" Silva underwent surgery this week to remove a cyst on the pituitary gland which is believed to be responsible for his acromegaly.
The condition is what gave him his enlarged features, but it also affected the natural production of testosterone. That's his reasoning for being on testosterone therapies in recent years, and with the ban of TRT, this surgery was something he felt was a necessity.
Silva posted a picture to Instagram from his hospital bed, and said all went well.
"My surgery was a success," he wrote. "I'll be back soon. Thank you to everyone who sent me their positive thoughts and energy."
Penick's Analysis: It was obvious in his performance against Andrei Arlovski that he's been affected by the inability to use some type of hormone replacement with his condition. Whether this surgery will have the desired effect remains to be seen, but it's something he had to try if he has hope of continuing his career.
