Donald Cerrone's fight with Eddie Alvarez next week could vault him into a potential No. 1 contender spot, but while he says he wants to prove himself as the best in the world, he's more concerned with just getting in the cage and competing against anyone.
"I'd be lying if I said I didn't want to be the best, but I would just fight anyone, any time, I don't care," Cerrone said in an interview with FoxSports.com last week. "Like let's talk for instance when I beat Eddie. There's going to be quite a bit of a wait before [Anthony] Pettis and [Gilbert] Melendez fight, they fight in December and they probably won't defend the belt till what March or April maybe?
"I'm going to try and fight, you already know it. I might go to 170, who knows, I don't care. So you ask me does the title mean a lot? Yeah it does, but then again no it doesn't."
Ultimately, Cerrone sees himself as an entertaining addition to any card he's on, and he's more concerned with fans wanting to see him compete than whether or not it's bringing him to a title fight.
"I don't care where I fight on the card, but to get people motivated or excited like 'Cowboy's fighting!' that's my overall goal," Cerrone said. "When I get stopped by people and they say 'I f***ing love watching you fight' - to me that's super cool."
Penick's Analysis: Given Rafael dos Anjos remains ahead of him, a rematch could be in line later this year if he beats Alvarez, which would keep him occupied to set him up for the Pettis-Melendez winner in the spring. That's the likely path if he beats Alvarez, which isn't as cut and dry as he clearly feels it will be. Still, there's something admirable about the way he approaches his career, because no matter what's going on outside of the cage, he's out to put on a show as often as the UFC will allow him to do so. Most of the time he follows through, and that's why people get excited about his fights.
