Former UFC Heavyweight Champion Junior dos Santos was scheduled to fight Stipe Miocic in May at UFC 173, but an injury took him out of the event, and has kept him sidelined the rest of the year. However, he may yet get a fight in before the end of the year.
According to Ariel Helwani on Wednesday's UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1, the UFC is targeting that same JDS-Miocic matchup for UFC on Fox 13, set to hit the US Airways Center in Phoenix, Arizona, on Dec. 13.
The last time dos Santos was in the cage was in October of last year, where he was beaten up badly a second time by UFC Champ Cain Velasquez, giving the edge to Velasquez in their series of fights 2-1.
As for Miocic, he fought Fabio Maldonado in place of dos Santos at UFC 173, taking him out in just 35 seconds for his third straight UFC win, bringing him to 6-1 in the organization.
Penick's Analysis: It was a fight that worked as a pay-per-view co-main event, and it could be just fine as a Fox headliner with five rounds as well. Given dos Santos' status as the former Champion, and the fact that ten million viewers saw his first fight with Velasquez on Fox, he's a valuable addition to a Fox card, especially with the return angle being played as well.
