It doesn't feel like over-hyped TUF season until Dana White makes some hyperbolic claim about one of the season's contestants. It happened again this weekend, as White says there's a fighter on the cast that he expects to be the women's strawweight version of Ronda Rousey.
"I love this season of The Ultimate Fighter, it's way better than the last season of The Ultimate Fighter," White said in a media scrum after UFC 177 (via MMAMania.com). "The reality is great, but the fights are fucking awesome, and that's all I really care about. Everybody is going to be happy. You guys are going to be blown away. There's a Ronda Rousey on this season of The Ultimate Fighter, absolutely."
There's no doubting the talent level of the fighters on TUF this season, as they'll be crowning a Champion at 115 lbs. However, White's over-selling simply leads to doubt given the show's history.
Penick's analysis: It's entirely possible someone winds up standing out from the pack during the season, but White putting these kind of comments out just serve to hurt whomever he's talking about. His past endorsements for TUF fighters haven't panned out, so it's not so much an honorable distinction as it could be a mark against them. Still, there's lots of reason to be optimistic for the fights and fighters coming to FS1 this year, so perhaps this time around White will be proven right.
