Renan Barao's failed weight cut on Friday has cost him his rematch for the UFC Bantamweight Championship.
Following the weigh-ins for UFC 177 on Friday night, UFC President Dana White said that Barao will not be getting a title fight in his next fight, and will instead have to win another fight to get back into contention. Additionally, he suggested that both Barao and his teammate Jose Aldo should move up in weight.
Dana White confirms Renan Barao will not get a title shot for his next fight in the UFC. Details coming soon to http://t.co/ff2pk2r6PK
Barao passed out while cutting weight early on Friday, and wound up hitting his head in the process. He was taken to the hospital and pulled from event, leading to newcomer Joe Soto getting a shot at T.J. Dillashaw tomorrow night.
Penick's Analysis: Cutting too much weight is dangerous, so if it's an issue for Barao, then yes, he should be moving up to featherweight. Considering the UFC shouldn't have given him the title fight tomorrow in the first place, the fact that he had to be pulled out the day before the event, canceling a fight that was already barely holding court as an acceptable main event, sealed his fate here. Whether he attempts to stay in bantamweight, or moves up, he's got to now prove he won't have an issue like this again or they'll have a hard time trusting him in main events.
