23-year-old Brian Ortega had a successful UFC debut turn into a disappointment this past week, as he was flagged for the steroid drostanolone out of his UFC on Fox 12 finish of Mike De La Torre.
Ortega released a statement on the failed test over the weekend, taking full responsibility and saying that his coaches and camp at Blackhouse MMA didn't know what he was using.
Ortega was fined by the California State Athletic Commission and suspended nine months.
Penick's Analysis: Accepting responsibility after the fact is fine, but taking the substances in the first place has tarnished his UFC career before it even gets started. He may get a chance to redeem himself in the Octagon after the suspension is up, but he's also in a situation where he's lower on the pecking order, which means the UFC could easily choose to make an example out of him.
