Tim Boetsch picked up a win out of nowhere on Saturday night, catching Brad Tavares with a left and then leaving the right hand out for Tavares to walk into against the cage. That comeback marked his first stoppage win since another come from behind victory, that one over Yushin Okami in February of 2012 at UFC 144.
While the win over Tavares came against a decidedly lower ranked opponent than Okami, it came in front of a home crowd in Maine, and Boetsch said after the win that it was the best moment of his career to date.
"There was a sense of urgency, but I knew all I had to do was [hit him] with my right hand, and the game would change drastically," he said after the event (transcribed by MMAJunkie.com). "I've had some big wins in the past, but this win in Bangor definitely is No. 1 in my memory. It was awesome, just knowing the entire arena was behind me. I definitely wanted to leave it all the cage, and I definitely think I did that."
"[That finishing ability is] just something that's in there. I'm glad it came out when it did, and I finished him off. You can't focus on [the bout being in your hometown]. I have the task at hand, and I knew that once I got rolling, I was going to run him over... He was working his position and working great technique, but this is fighting, it can change fast. I got back to my roots, and honestly, you see the results. I might be a little bit battered and bloody, but I got my hand raised at the end, and that's what matters in this game."
Penick's Analysis: Boetsch bought himself some time in his UFC career, as he'll get at least two more paydays out of them after that win. He was on his way to being down two rounds to none, and he wasn't looking that great by the halfway point of the fight. This was the epitome of the proverbial "lucky punch." He's got the power to put people down, but it just came out of nowhere, and neither strikes were full force shots. It's still a great moment for him, but at best it's bought him a little more time.
