More than a year and a half after scoring a huge knockout win over Rich Franklin, Cung Le returns to action next month in a headlining bout against Michael Bisping in Macau.
The five round UFC Fight Night main event is a bit more than he's used to preparing for, but he feels he's going to be ready if the fight goes late, and he doesn't see much Bisping does that will threaten him in the matchup.
"This time around, I'm going to pace myself and try not to blow my wad in the first two rounds," Le said after Saturday's UFC on Fox 12 event in San Jose (via MMAJunkie.com). "I feel really good for this fight. Nothing promised, but I know I'm ready to go."
"I think the only threat [Bisping presents] is his cardio. He's going to try to take me to the late rounds, but when you take me to the late rounds when I'm shape, you're going to have to endure all the damage that I'm going to bring that night."
As for his future beyond the event, Le's not ruling anything out, but he's not committing to anything, either.
"One fight at a time – we'll see," Le said. "I pushed a few movie projects for this fight. It wasn't a leading role, but I want to compete and be the main event. I love superfights, and Michael is a superfight to me. I plan to bring the lightning followed by the thunder."
Penick's Analysis: Le-Bisping is an intriguing enough fight for a Fight Pass card out of Macau. There's a little damning with faint praise thrown in there, of course, but in a vacuum, it's a fine fight which should be entertaining. If Bisping presses Le late, he'll definitely have the edge, but even an aging Le brings a dangerous striking game Bisping will have to be wary of early on.
