In yet another excellent performance, Robbie Lawler secured his title rematch with Johny Hendricks in a five round decision over Matt Brown on Saturday night at UFC on Fox 12.
The fight got off to a hot start in a fantastic first round. Lawler opened things up with a precise attack, scoring counter strikes, and avoiding damage in the first couple of minutes. Then Brown cracked him with a two punch combo that wobbled him, and the fight was on. They beat each other up for the next couple of minutes, with Lawler ultimately doing more damage overall to take the frame.
In the second, Lawler seemed to give himself a breather, not wasting any energy, but not doing much of anything either. Brown was able to even things up on the scorecards, but things went back in Lawler's favor over the next two rounds.
Much like he did in the first Hendricks fight in March, Lawler took control in the third and fourth rounds, picking Brown apart with punches and kicks mixed to the body and head. He had Brown in a lot of trouble throughout both rounds, but of course Brown's seeming knack for absorbing inhuman amounts of punishment kept him in the fight.
That led to a massively entertaining fifth round, as both fighters knew they needed to finish strong. Brown especially seemed to know he was on the ropes, and he fired off several big flurries in the opening minute. Unfortunately for him, he seemed to badly damage his hand early in the round, and Lawler was able to fire back over the final few minutes to solidify the fight.
With the win, Lawler will fight Hendricks a second time, likely in January at UFC 182. Brown's winning streak comes to an end, but he more than likely keeps himself in the UFC's good graces, and could yet get into title contention with a shorter run of victories.
