Matt Brown will attempt to earn a shot at the UFC Welterweight Championship tomorrow, as he takes on Robbie Lawler at UFC on Fox 12.
In his last outing, Brown stopped Erick Silva in a back and forth fight that saw him hurt a few times with shots to the body, but while that had an effect on him in May, he warns Lawler it's not going to be a weakness come Saturday night.
"I did a lot of abs workouts," Brown jokingly said in an interview with Ariel Helwani ahead of Saturday's event (transcribed by BloodyElbow.com). "I'm prepared if he does [go for body shots]. I don't like to make any predictions for the fight, but if he decides that that is what he wants to go for, we have done certain things to prepare. If he goes for that he is going to pay the price for it."
Brown's got respect for Lawler's power and talent, but he's not expecting it to be an overly skillful affair from the longtime veteran. Regardless, he's prepped for whatever happens in the fight.
"I don't think he is the highest skilled fighter," he said. "I think he is probably the most athletic, hard-hitting and dangerous fighter. I don't set any expectations for the fight. It has to grow organically."
Penick's Analysis: One of the reasons this fight is so fascinating is that they're both very similar. They've both had some weaknesses in the past that as of late they've seemed to shore up, they're both brawlers capable of stopping fights, and they're each capable of taking a ton of punishment. This is a fantastic matchup, and the winner will make for an exciting title challenger against Johny Hendricks.
