"The thing I've been working so hard toward is finally here. A lot of people ask for stuff like this and may not be completely or entirely prepared for it. That's not the case with me because I've worked so hard for so long, and this is finally about to happen. It's actually going to happen. We are going to go in there and try to rip each other's heads off. There has been so much restraint on both of our parts for so long, being around each other, and now we get to get into a cage and beat each other up for 25 minutes. Thanks Dana White. Thanks Lorenzo Fertitta. Thank you UFC for having this great sport where you get these little small gloves and you get to go out and try to punch someone in the face...
It's awesome. We can tweet and have our children say stuff on the Internet as much as we want. But on September 27, Jon Jones is going to walk into that cage and they are going to close the door behind him. The only people in there are going to be me and him. There will be no Greg Jackson or Mike Winkeljohn. There will be no Bob Cook or Javier Mendez. It's going to be me and Jon with those guys outside of the cage. But inside the cage it will be me and Jon duking it out like men. I cannot wait."
Penick's Analysis: The great thing about this fight is there's already so much built into it from both of them commenting extensively on one another over the last year and a half or so. Jones has gone from saying Cormier wasn't worthy of being in the conversation to calling for that fight, while Cormier's been singularly focused on getting to this point with his teammate and friend Cain Velasquez in control of the heavyweight division. Cormier's wrestling game is something Jones hasn't faced, as he's stronger than anyone Jones has had to go against in that respect. It makes for a highly intriguing matchup, and the best possible replacement following the loss of Alexander Gustafsson.
