There is a very real possibility that the UFC could sign Gina Carano this week, bringing her back to fight for the first time in over five years. If she signs, UFC President Dana White said this week that she'll likely fight Ronda Rousey this December.
It's a fight that could lead to some backlash from some of the other fighters in the division, but at least one potential contender doesn't think there's much of a problem with it.
New UFC signee Holly Holm took part in a roundtable with ESPN.com writers this weekend, and she thinks Carano has enough of a history in the sport to be afforded that type of opportunity.
"Carano has been on the big show before, so she can handle the pressure," Holm wrote. "There are a lot of girls who have been working hard for a shot who might deserve it a little more than someone who has been out that long, but Carano has put a lot of time in before. She's earned her spot in certain ways. Who am I to say Carano is undeserving of an opportunity? I'll let the promoter make those decisions."
Penick's Analysis: Carano coming in for a one off with Rousey is something the UFC can do this December because they don't really have an established contender. The Cat Zingano-Amanda Nunes winner will certainly not be happy about it, but that's the only one who will have a valid complaint if they go with Carano instead. This isn't going to be a majorly competitive fight in all likelihood, but it's something that the UFC can easily sell, so in that respect it almost makes sense at this point.
