Fabricio Werdum held onto his spot as the No. 1 contender in the UFC's heavyweight division on Saturday night, dominating Travis Browne through 25 minutes en route to a unanimous decision victory.
Browne started off alright, getting in some solid exchanges for the first few minutes, but Werdum wound up taking him down, and then late in the round hurt him with a major combination against the cage.
That was a sign of things to come, as he controlled a an increasingly tired Browne in the striking game and in a few grappling exchanges. Werdum continued to land at a higher rate than Browne, and it was all taking its toll.
The one-sided nature of the fight rolled over into the third round, where Werdum kept up the output and had Browne hurt badly. In one of the highlight moments of the fight, Werdum dropped to his back after a mid-round exchange, then kipped up Shawn Michaels style back to his feet and delivered a kick to the body.
Werdum slowed down a bit in the fourth round, but still landed several strikes for every one thrown by Browne. He kept that up in the final frame, bloodying up Browne's face along the way and landing several big combinations that had Browne reeling. It was clear at the bout's conclusion that Werdum had beaten Browne from pillar to post, and he walked away with a win and the promise of a date with UFC Champ Velasquez in Mexico this fall.
