After scoring a first-round knockout over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira on Friday in Abu Dhabi, Roy Nelson was afraid he had injured his hand in the process.
According to a report from ToughTalkMMA.com, that's indeed the case.
Per the report, Nelson suffered a broken hand during the bout, and he'll undergo surgery on Thursday to repair the injury. There's no word yet on how long he'll be out, but he'll have to rehab and heal up following Thursday's surgery.
Nelson got back in the win column in that UFC Fight Night 39 main event, scoring a couple of knockdowns on Nogueira before finally putting him away with a brutal right hand strike.
Penick's Analysis: That won't allow him to make a quick turnaround, but he should still be back before the end of the year, and for his sake hopefully earlier than that. It might take out one potential idea for his next opponent, as Alistair Overeem should be back before he's able to return, but it's all up in the air anyway as he just fought. Once they know his return timetable they can set something else up.
