Rory MacDonald gets to fight in his home country again in June when he takes on Tyron Woodley at UFC 174. A win could put him into a title fight with Johny Hendricks, and he said this week he'd like that fight to take place in Canada as well later this year.
"When I beat Woodley, hopefully [I get a title shot] in the fall or winter in Toronto or Montreal," MacDonald said in an interview with MMAJunkie.com. "Hendricks is a great fighter. I have a lot of respect for him. He's definitely a good fighter, and I'm excited to see him in the future."
MacDonald wants to make his own way in the UFC's 170 lb. division, and with his friend, teammate, and mentor Georges St-Pierre no longer atop the field, he thinks that's something he can do.
"I'm striving to be a champion in the welterweight division," MacDonald said. "I don't want to fill Georges' shoes. That's an impossible task. I don't want to be Georges. I want to be myself. I want to represent my style of martial arts and my own personality."
"Georges was probably the greatest champion ever, and he's been a great person for me to learn from, train beside and watch fight over the years. He's a model for Canadian fighters, and I just hope I can be as dominant as him in the cage."
PENICK'S ANALYSIS: The UFC's not likely to allow MacDonald to dictate when and where that fight takes place if he does get past Woodley. And it's dependent on when Hendricks is ready to go. If Hendricks is ready to fight by October or November, the UFC probably won't hold him out until December for the Montreal card, so MacDonald will have to take the fight whenever it's offered to him, if he indeed works into that title fight.
