Jon Jones may be fighting Alexander Gustafsson a second time later this year should he get past Glover Teixeira at UFC 172, but he's already tired of hearing Gustafsson's statements in the media.
The two fought to a close decision last September at UFC 165, with Jones winning what was a rightful decision. Gustafsson believes he deserved the win, and now that he's picked up another win talk has continued. In an interview with FoxSports.com on Monday, Jones said he's heard enough from Gustafsson about last year's matchup.
"I respected him a lot more before we fought," Jones said. "I'll tell you what, he has so much arrogance for someone who didn't win. I find it funny, because Gustafsson lost the fight fair and square. I will admit he won Round 1 and Round 3, but that's it. I won the fight."
"I've never heard someone chirp so much who lost. I could see if I poked him in the eye and the fight had to be stopped or I caught him with a big punch while he was winning and it was a fluke or something. But it was nothing like that."
Jones said Gustafsson had "every opportunity to seize the moment," yet failed. Because of that, Jones thinks Gustafsson needs to tone down the talk.
"He needs to close his mouth and go back to the drawing board," Jones said, "and humbly come back for a second chance."
PENICK'S ANALYSIS: Though there was certainly some controversy the night of UFC 165, the more people looked at that fight round by round, the clearer it became that Jones had won the fight. Now, Gustafsson's succeeded in getting under Jones' skin, and that might be just what he was hoping to do. And regardless of what Jones thinks of the talk right now, Gustafsson will be next for him if and when he defeats Teixeira.
