The big question in Women's MMA over the last couple of weeks has revolved around Ronda Rousey and who will be her next opponent. Tonight on his Twitter account, Dana White put that speculation to bed by announcing that Ronda Rousey will be facing Alexis Davis at UFC 175 in Las Vegas on July 5.
Rousey was rumored to fight a number of different women for her next fight. Cat Zingano earned a title shot with her victory over Miesha Tate last year, but Zingano blew out her knee in training and is not ready to return at this point. Cyborg Justino has always been in the mix, but hasn't proven that she can make the 135 lb. weight limit, among myriad other issues. Legacy's Holly Holm has been racking up the buzz lately, but her management team and Zuffa are unable to come to contract terms to bring the talented former boxer over to the UFC. And of course Gina Carano's name has been bandied about a bit in the last month as well.
Davis (16-5 MMA, 3-0 UFC) is riding a five-fight winning streak which includes decision victories over Jessica Eye, Liz Carmouche, and Rosi Sexton in her three UFC fights. She came into the UFC after submitting both Shayna Baszler and Hitomi Akano by rear naked choke. The 29 year old Canadian will be looking to be the first fighter to defeat the champion Rousey in a MMA fight.
Rousey (9-0 MMA, 3-0) UFC) is the only person to hold the UFC's Women's Bantamweight Championship since it's inception. Rousey won her first eight professional fight by armbar, seven of which ended in the first round, before defeating Sara McMann by first round TKO at UFC 170 in February of this year.
UFC 175 is currently scheduled to be headlined by a UFC Middleweight Championship fight between the reigning champion Chris Weidman and his challenger Lyoto Machida. UFC 175 is scheduled for July 5, 2014, and will air on pay per view at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
