After picking up his first win in the light heavyweight division last weekend at UFC 170, Daniel Cormier is out for a major fight in his next 205 lb. outing.
According to a report from Ariel Helwani on Wednesday's latest UFC Tonight program on Fox Sports 1, Cormier wants "no less" than a No. 1 contender's fight. Depending on what happens next week in the Alexander Gustafsson-Jim Manuwa fight as well, Cormier thinks he could be next in line for a title fight.
Per the report, Cormier wants to fight the winner of UFC 172's Phil Davis vs. Anthony "Rumble" Johnson with a title shot on the line if Alexander Gustafsson fights Jon Jones after Glover Teixeira. However, if Manuwa upsets Gustafsson, Cormier believes he should be moved into the title fight with the winner of Jones-Teixeira.
Penick's Analysis: These are the two fights that make sense for Cormier, and it all comes down to what happens March 8. If Manuwa pulls off the upset, Cormier's spot as a contender at heavyweight could make him a viable option for the Light Heavyweight Title shot. If Gustafsson gets the title fight next, Cormier vs. Davis/Johnson for the next shot after that is perfect. It's now just on the UFC and what they'd like to do on that front after the Gustafsson-Manuwa fight next week.
