Lightweight contender T.J. Grant was supposed to get a title fight last summer after knocking out Gray Maynard, but he suffered a concussion in early summer that forced him out of a fight with Benson Henderson.
The UFC wanted to give him the Title bout with Anthony Pettis in December, but he was still not ready to return.
Grant gave an update on his condition to UFC Tonight's Ariel Helwani on Wednesday, saying that he's about 90-95% back, though he's making sure to take things deliberately slow to not suffer any further setback.
However, while he doesn't have an official timeline for his return, he's got a goal date in mind. The UFC is making their debut in his hometown of Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada on Oct. 4, and Grant would like to take part in that card if he's cleared to fight by then.
Penick's Analysis: Grant is smartly not putting anything to risk with a concussion that continues to have lingering symptoms. Thankfully he's getting better, and even if he has to delay until October, it will be great for him if he can come back in his hometown. And given the UFC Lightweight Title won't be on the line until late in the year, he can get right back into the mix with an October win.
