Saturday's UFC Fight Night 36 main event began as most expected, with Lyoto Machida and Gegard Mousasi starting tentatively to gauge what each was presenting the other. Things picked up as the fight went on, but while Machida began mixing in a steadier stream of attacks, Mousasi wasn't able to really find that next level in the bout.
The former Strikeforce Champ admitted as much at the post-fight press conference, saying he just wasn't able to get moving.
"He was always a step ahead," Mousasi said (via MMAFighting.com). "I just couldn't get started."
Further, Mousasi didn't feel he had much of an argument for taking the fight despite how close it appeared in the fight's stats, and wasn't bother by the scores read off.
"I don't know about the scoring," he said. "Maybe I had one round, maybe two."
Penick's Analysis: Both fighters started on the same pace, but it was clear that Mousasi just couldn't figure Machida out throughout the fight. He had a few spurts of success, more than some others have had against Machida, but he couldn't sustain any offense. Machida was able to pick up his pace and deliver more damage, and it kept Mousasi out of sorts through most of the bout. It's back to the drawing board now if he wants to move back up the ladder.
