By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief Lightweight fighter Nate Mohr and welterweight Matt Arroyo have joined the ever growing list of recently released fighters according to separate reports at FiveOuncesOfPain.com.
Mohr's release came shortly after a third round tko loss to Dennis Siver on the undercard of last month's UFC 93 card. It was his first fight in over a year after knee surgery kept him out of action after a loss to Manny Gamburyan at UFC 79. As his Octagon record moved to 1-3 it was not enough to keep him in the UFC with cuts needing to be made.
A former Ultimate Fighter contestant, Matt Arroyo won only one of his three fights in the UFC, and dropped his last two. The last one came at UFC 94 in a split decision to Dan Cramer, in what was Cramer's professional debut.
The two join a growing list of fighters cut due to the UFC's need to shrink their roster. Others cut in the last month or so include Rich Clementi, Luigi Fiorivanti, Eddie Sanchez, Christian Wellisch, Reese Andy, and Derek Downey.
Penick's Analysis: Two more cuts that aren't at all surprising. Arroyo's one that should be back at some point, as he's young and talented, but he'll need to pick up a few wins in a row and come back a better fighter to have success in the Octagon. As for Mohr, it's a bit unfortunate for him as his long layoff probably contributed to the latest loss, but his Octagon record does nothing to help his case for sticking around.
