Prior to Saturday night's UFC 168 event, there was renewed talk of a future boxing match between Anderson Silva and Roy Jones, Jr. The two have wanted to put that fight together for a long time, and UFC President Dana White seemed inclined to acquiesce to the continued requests.
Unfortunately for them, Silva's broken leg takes that off the table entirely. However, it's not stopping Jones from his quest to box a UFC fighter.
On the post-fight show on Fox Sports Live early Sunday morning, Ariel Helwani reported that Jones now wants to fight "retired" UFC welterweight Nick Diaz. He told UFC President Dana White as much, and White allegedly told him he'd think about it.
With Diaz still under contract with the UFC, they would have to sign off on that fight being put together, but it's certainly something in which he might be interested in participating.
Penick's Analysis: I think this one's a lot more likely to come together than the Anderson Silva fight ever was. Diaz dabbled in boxing once before, and he's been looking for an interesting fight. If a bout with Jones was either co-promoted or somehow put together under the UFC banner - and I'm not sure how they'd handle that entirely - the UFC could then still make money off of Diaz while he continues to turn down other fights he's been offered.
