When you order UFC 168 later this month, the pay-per-view cost is going to be a bit more than usual. The UFC has increased the HD cost for that event from the standard $54.95, and the year end show will instead cost $59.95.
It has already led to some complaints after fans saw the increase in advertisements from DirecTV, but UFC President Dana White brushed off concerns about the increase after Saturday's UFC on Fox 9 event.
"It's five bucks," White said in a media scrum after UFC on Fox 9 on Saturday (via MMAJunkie.com). "Get a couple more friends and have them come over."
Five bucks isn't much to someone in White’s position, but the arbitrary nature of the price increase isn't likely to sit well with people either.
"It's just for that fight," White said. "Some guys got together in the office and decided to do that."
Penick's Analysis: Raising prices for one event automatically makes every other event a "lesser" card. By saying "this one's worth more," it hurts all other cards, and they've got enough pay-per-view issues as it is. Now, on the surface, it's fine to differentiate events, but when fans are subjected to several sub par pay-per-view events in any given year, many won't appreciate them trying to squeeze out even more.
