Hector Lombard has found new life in the UFC's welterweight division after knocking out Nate Marquardt in October, and he's looking to follow that up in March when he meets Jake Shields at UFC 171 in Dallas.
Lombard thinks the fight is a great next step after the Marquardt fight, and plans to move to the next level at 170 lbs. after that matchup.
"I think that I match up well, not only with him, but with anyone in the UFC," Lombard said in an interview with Australian site MMAKanvas this week. "I want to fight the top guys up there. And Jake Shields, we all know he is a top dog up there."
"I want to knock him out and move up the ladder. He is going to try and make the fight like he always does, boring. I actually believe my ground game is better than his."
Penick's Analysis: This is a major fight for both Lombard and Shields. Another decisive win for Lombard could quickly put him in contention at welterweight, while another big win for Shields can continue moving him forward. Shields has a harder road to a title because he's gotten there once and his style isn't enticing to many, but he can get back there if he just keeps beating people.
