Firas Zahabi was quoted recently saying that Georges St-Pierre could potentially retire after the Johny Hendricks fight at UFC 167 if he wasn't feeling the motivation to continue. That brought about concern over whether St-Pierre would legitimately walk away after just one more fight, but Zahabi clarified this week that his comment was taken out of context.
Ariel Helwani gave an update via Zahabi during Wednesday's "UFC Tonight" program on Fox Sports 1, and Zahabi said St-Pierre's not ready to go away anytime soon.
"I spoke to Firas Zahabi and he said the remarks were taken out of context," Helwani commented. "A lot of people thought he might retire after the fight with Johny Hendricks. But that's not what he said. He said that if GSP loses his drive through a training camp, then he'll retire. But he says it's been a great camp, best in two years. He's not thinking about retirement and has lots of fights left."
Penick's Analysis: That makes a lot more sense than St-Pierre actually thinking of walking away right now, but given his frustrations with the drug testing surrounding the event, it was at least reasonable enough to believe. It's good to hear that it's not the case, because St-Pierre still has plenty of time left in his career given his age and relative lack of damage absorbed over the years, and if he continues to win he can be on top for a while yet.
