Cat Zingano lost out on her shot at Ronda Rousey and The Ultimate Fighter 17 when she suffered a bad knee injury late this spring. She's been rehabbing the right knee since then, and has been making good progress, but now it seems she may have suffered a setback.
In a video posted to her Facebook page, Zingano's orthopedic doctor, Dr. Ronald S. Kvitne of the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopedic Clinic in Los Angeles, gave an update on her condition, and revealed what may be an injury to her left knee.
"Cat is now three months out from her right knee anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction," he said (transcribed via MMAWeekly.com). "She's three months out; her knee looks great. She's got almost perfect motion, she's got great strength, she's got excellent stability. She's about three months from getting back in the ring and starting to spar."
"The only problem is the left knee appears to have somewhere along the line gotten into trouble with a medial meniscus tear. So we'll confirm that today with an MRI. If she does may have a torn meniscus, she'll need surgery fairly quickly, so she can get back on track with the rehab. We think three months from now she'd be back in the ring training, sparring; so fighting in about four to six months from now."
Penick's Analysis: It may not be too harsh of a setback for Zingano, but it's still unfortunate that she may have to go under the knife once again. It's a similar situation to what happened with Georges St-Pierre, though apparently less severe. She was likely overcompensating for the knee and working the other one harder than she meant to, which ultimately led to further injury. Hopefully this timeline can work out for her, because if she can fight four to six months from now she'll be able to face the winner of Rousey-Tate.
